Basement Moisture Problems
If you are among the majority of people in the United States, then you probably use your basement mostly for storage purposes or for doing the laundry in. No matter what you use your basement for, this is one of the main rooms in your home that you need to be taking care of, since the rest of your home sits on top of it and the foundation surrounding it. Water leaking into this room can be a serious problem for any home, but there are things that you can do to prevent the majority of the damage that can occur from it.
Sometimes you will see cracks in the walls or possibly even the floor and while some people try to seal these cracks up with cement or even silicone caulking, this never works. The cement is far too rigid to keep the cracks sealed and the silicone is, as well. These two fillers will eventually just fall out and you will have a leak all over again. The best way to deal with cracks in the concrete of your basement is to use an injection of concrete that you can apply with a simple caulking gun. This used to be pretty expensive and require some heavy equipment, but this is no longer the case. You can do this yourself and it will not cost you much.
Keeping the humidity down in your basement to reduce the chances of mold growth is also something that you want to consider. One of the worst things that could happen to a home is a mold infection, since a lot of the time materials have to be removed from the building and replaced to get rid of it.
You can keep the humidity down in your basement by making sure that your dryer is vented to the outside of the house and that you do not leave wet clothes in the washer for very long. The dryer all the objects in your basement are, including items there temporarily like clothes, the dryer your basement and the air in it will be overall. Avoid air drying clothes in the basement at all costs.
Installing an exhaust vent can also help with some moisture concerns and this can be done by you or by a professional you hire and should cost maybe a couple hundred dollars and half a day’s time.
